The Sunny Street Cafe Chess Grand Prix

There are 16 pieces, but only one king. Once a week the Sunny Street Café in Huntsville, Alabama opens up after hours for a small group from the community to play their favorite game: chess.
On September 11 and 12th, Madison-Huntsville Chess Club held their very first tournament. The Sunny Street Café Chess Grand Prix was a huge success! 23 players of all ages competed at the event, with one kid and one adult tying for the grand prize.
This past Sunday, September 27th, former U.S. Champion Stuart Rachels spoke to the club. In 1981, Rachels broke Bobby Fisher’s record as the youngest chess master at a mere 11 years old. Rachels gave his fascinating perspective on Fisher, who although is considered by some to be the greatest chess player of all time, had a very polarizing career.
The Huntsville Sunny Street Café is happy to open its doors to Madison-Huntsville Chess Club. The club meets every Tuesday from 6-10pm at Sunny Street Cafe, 7143-B U.S. 72 W. at the Slaughter Road intersection in Madison.
Sunny Street Café has event rooms in most all locations that are open for the community to reserve. If you are part of a community organization, or are simply looking for a venue to host an event, don’t hesitate to call your local Sunny Street!
