Grilled Cheese Reigns Supreme

Perfectly toasted bread, two different kinds of cheese melted together in a gooey, stringy, sandwich: that’s grilled cheese. Add a bowl of hot tomato soup and you have your childhood swimming before your eyes. There’s a good reason why today is National Grilled Cheese Day!
Okay, so that might be a little melodramatic, but there’s no denying that when you’re feeling down and out, or just too tired to whip up a 5 star lunch, making a grilled cheese will always satisfy.
Although people have been melting cheese with bread since probably the Roman times, our idea of grilled cheese came about in the 1920’s. It all started with a guy from Iowa named Otto Rohwedder. He invented the first bread slicer, and, as they say, the rest is history.

Once sliced bread was readily available, Mr. James L. Kraft stepped up to the plate (pun intended) and revolutionized the pasteurization process. Kraft Singles were born. Now we had sliced bread and cheese that didn’t go bad as fast. Grilled cheese is the only natural next step, no?
Since then, grilled cheese has become the easy, go-to meal. It’s even made it to gourmet restaurants. Think of all the possibilities you can do with bread and cheese: add tomatoes, spinach, pesto, caramelized onions, or (it goes without saying) bacon.
Grilled cheese reigns supreme at Sunny Street- Monterey Jack and cheddar with sliced tomato, pressed between two scrumptious slices of sourdough bread. Add bacon if you’re feeling adventurous. Supreme Grilled Cheese makes a mouthwateringly good lunch.
